One of the most common signs that indicate an ageing clutch plate. When slippage happens, the RPMs in your car would be increasing but the car won’t be gaining speed accordingly. It would be gaining speed very slowly. This happens because the clutch in your car has is slipping and the clutch plates are not able to provide enough traction and power from engine to transmission.

Shuddering is shaking or hopping feeling that one gets while releasing the clutch too fast in a car. If the hopping feeling continues while driving at low speeds, then it is a sign that there is something wrong with the clutch system in your car. Sometimes, this happens because of water that gets into the clutch while the car was driven through flooded roads. If this is the case, then the hopping effect goes away after driving for some kilometres.

If the shuddering continues, then it is a good idea to get in touch with a mechanic. This issue can also occur due to other reasons like misaligned engine and transmission, worn out engine mounts or the friction plate in the clutch is not working properly.

Normally when the clutch plate in the car is good, the gear shifts are very smooth. If you have to use more force to slot or engage the car into gear, then there are chances that something is wrong with the clutch. Even after completely pressing the clutch, there will be noises while engaging gear and this also a sign that indicates ageing clutch. Some times, the issue can be fixed by replacing some of the parts or even by making some adjustments to the existing parts.

As mentioned above, depending on the area where you drive the car, the life of the clutch plate can increase or decrease. In normal driving conditions, the life of a clutch in a car can be around 1 lakh km. In city or heavy traffic conditions where the clutch is constantly used, the life comes down drastically. It is important to get the clutch plate in your car fixed because it is what connects the engine to the transmission. If anything goes wrong with the clutch, then the performance and fuel economy of the car would also come down. Depending upon the signs, the cost of repair on your car might differ. If you are experiencing slippage, then it might cost you somewhere between Rs 6,000 to Rs 12,000. In expensive cars, it can go as high as Rs 50,000.
