Investigators from the Caledon detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have recovered three high-end vehicles reported stolen from Toronto in shipping containers in Bolton.

In a release, the OPP said officers were dispatched on June 20 to a shipping yard on Coleraine Drive in Bolton to recover a reported stolen vehicle.

“The initial investigation revealed that the vehicle was in a shipping container scheduled to be shipped overseas,” read the release. “The Caledon Community Street Crime Unit was engaged and a judicial authorization was obtained to search the container.”

After further investigation, police said three stolen vehicles were recovered including:

- 2020 Land Rover Range Rover SVR

The OPP said thieves are increasingly using technology that is able to bypass vehicle security systems and alarms. To help further prevent your vehicle from being targeted, police are suggesting vehicle owners install additional security measures including:

- Using a signal blocking pouch/box which can block key fobs from transmitting their code to the vehicle

- Turn off the keyless fob wireless signal at night

- Use a steering wheel lock or car alarm

- Consider a secondary audible car alarm

- Install a GPS car tracker

“Electronic auto theft is on the rise as more vehicles are equipped with technology, such as keyless entry fobs. In fact, the insurance industry has seen the growing trend that thieves are able to copy fob information and steal cars right from your driveway,” read the OPP’s release.

“The term ‘relay thefts’ involve the use of equipment designed to boost and exploit the signals sent out by a vehicle's legitimate key fob. This allows a thief to unlock and start the engine of a vehicle remotely,” it added.

In addition, the OPP is warning vehicle owners that thieves are also looking for personal identification left in plain sight in unlocked vehicles such as driver’s licences, insurance slips, vehicle ownerships, passports, mobile devices or laptops from unsecured vehicles, which can then be used to further victimize.

The investigation into the three stolen vehicles recovered in Bolton is ongoing, and no arrest has yet been made. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Caledon OPP at 905-584-2241.

Tips and information can also be left anonymously by contacting Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.

“When you contact Crime Stoppers you stay anonymous, you never have to testify, and you could receive a cash reward of up to $2,000 upon an arrest,” added the OPP release.
